When you hear the term Botox, what’s the first image that comes to mind? Celebrities with faces frozen in time? A Botox injection to the forehead? Most of your images probably contain a woman, too.

But in recent years, the Botox industry has seen a boom in male consumers, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. ABC news reports that men seeking cosmetic treatments has doubled in the last decade. The report also states that Botox injections are the most popular treatment among men.

Botox, also known as Botulinum toxin, is a combination of a protein and neurotoxin that arrests the activity of muscles. When injected into the face, Botox helps to stop facial muscles from contracting and causing wrinkles. As a result, it can reduce the signs of fine lines and crows feet.

One patient explained that he began noticing a few lines on his forehead, and thought that it was making him look older. He made this comment to his wife, who decided to go in a different direction for his Christmas gift — she bought him a card with a gift certificate for one Botox treatment.

Referred to as “Bro-Tox” in some medical dictionaries, Botox for men is gaining repute quickly, and one study shows that in 2011 alone, about 300,000 men elected these injections. One plastic surgeon states that he has seen more men asking for Botox in recent years, explaining that men also want to look their best. Another surgeon added that the patients coming into his clinic are not what people might expect — men who are overly concerned about their appearance.

The patient that used his gift certificate works in a chemical company doing industrial work, and also restores old cars.

Botox may not be as popular for men as it is for women, but with the number of men requesting these treatments, Botox cosmetics for men will continue to expand. It could soon become the best aging skin treatment for all people, so you may have to tweak your mental image just a bit. To see more, read this.
