If you’re curious about whether or not you have allergies to anything, then it’s a good idea to invest in allergy testing. But what actually happens when you get tested for allergies? Here’s a quick look at what the allergy testing process entails.

The first thing you’ll need to do is get a referral from your primary care doctor. If you’re concerned about allergies to certain foods, medications, or other substances, they will direct you to an allergist.

You’ll need to make an appointment with your allergist in order to begin the allergy testing process. In most cases, you’ll get a chance to tell your allergist about any specific concerns or family history of allergies to certain substances.

Once you’ve gotten a medical history taken, it will be time to actually test for allergies. This is done by pricking the surface of the skin with a very small amount of the allergens you’d like to be tested for. Common allergens that patients have tested for include pollen, pet hair, peanuts, and penicillin. You’ll be left under close supervision to see which of the allergens irritates your body. If there’s irritation at the test site, then it usually means you’re allergic to that substance.
