When trying to find the best acne treatment for your skin, the options can be pretty overwhelming. There are lots of different acne treatment products, and they all claim to be the best at what they do. But before you succumb to the allure of the quick-fix, here are some things you can do to minimize breakouts and prevent future acne altogether.

Change your diet – This is always a bummer to hear, but chances are there’s a huge contributory factor in your diet. Whether its too much greasy food or too many inflammatory foods (foods that can cause inflammation in the skin, making acne worse and more painful), the only way to know for sure is to test out a different diet. Cutting down on the fried stuff will eliminate extra grease and oils on your hands, and adding anti-inflammatory foods will soothe your agitated skin.

Change your products – If you’ve been using the same kinds of face products or conditioners (which can give you back acne) then maybe it’s time for a switch. You may not have known it, but certain products can clog your pores and lead to additional breakouts, especially thick, creamy, scented lotions and conditioners. Try switching your routine around and find products that won’t add any extra buildup to your skin.

Change your habits – Even though it’s hard not to, picking at your zits will increase the likelihood that they’ll come back. When you touch your breakouts, you run the risk of exposing them to the additional dirt and oils on your hands. Picking at your zits also increases your chance of getting acne scars. Acne scars form when you impact the tissues surrounding your breakout, like a little bruise that leaves a mark.

So what is the best acne treatment for your skin? Since everyone’s skin is so unique and the causes can vary so much, the only way to know for sure is to visit your dermatologist and find out.
