Grey areas existing in some many different circumstances in life, and the American healthcare system is no different. What role do urgent care clinics really play in the United States, and what role will they play in the future?
Though the urgent care movement began nearly 40 years ago during the 1970′s, it has only recently begun to gain traction and make waves within the last decade or so. During this time, urgent care facilities went from being disregarded as “doc-in-a-box” offices to being thrust to the forefront of the American healthcare industry. If you’re a new parent, then chances are you’ve already spent some time searching online for symptoms and home remedies to ear, nose, and throat problems. Unfortunately, the United States is undergoing a severe public health crisis — a crisis that has been in the making for decades. Nearly two thirds of all American adults are overweight or obese. In medical standards, being overweight means having a body mass index (BMI) of 25-29.9% and being obese means having a BMI above 30%. It’s well known that either conditions cause serious short- and long-term health problems. Men and women who are overweight or obese are at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and other dangerous conditions. That is why overweight and obese individuals should seriously consider losing weight — not because of issues with “body image” but rather because of issues with physical well-being.
